Introducing the next installment in this triple album review, from the Atlanta native: “Go+” by SoFaygo. I’m not really finna go super in depth with this one because I don’t necessarily feel like it’s that type of project. This’ll just be a short excerpt highlighting a few things I think he did well and why I felt it was worthy of review.
Let me start by making this very precise point. For rappers, there’s a certain intangible trait of “waviness” that some have, and some don’t. This trait isn’t quantifiable, justifiable, or even that explainable. I think the closest explanation I could give would be a confident smoothness. Frankly, it’s people who make music for girls 🤷🏽♂️. I’d say the best example is Gunna, but SoFaygo does a really good job of it as well.
That being said, when I’m listening to SoFaygo, yes his beats are hard, but I’m mainly listening to him. His voice is the primary instrument, and he uses it in a number of ways. First, he has an arsenal of different vocal styles and inflictions that he interchanges within songs, keeping his music from being stagnant. Then, and this is what I really admire, he does an amazing job of layering his vocals. His songs almost sound like a choir of adlibs, and it’s beautiful. Not sure of this, but I feel like most people would underestimate the amount of talent it takes to create his style of music. It takes a lot, and when accompanied with great production, it’s very pleasing to the ear.
My final point is about his lyrics. Truthfully, I’m not really listening to them thaaat hard because I don’t think they’re the main focus. But from what I gather it’s less about violence, selling drugs, and disrespecting women and more about him getting money, spending money, etc. It’s less gangster rap and more flex rap, which suits him and adds to that waviness factor.
