Happy Valetine’s Daye!

What a blessing it is for Valentine’s Daye to land on blog post day, now I can actually celebrate this cursed holiday! Since I’m single, I’ll be celebrating with another important discussion! *Says while crying*. This is one I think about a lot actually. If you’re here you probably already know the topic at hand, but just to make sure, the question is should Valentine’s Daye be a musical holiday?
I understand why it’s not, but in my opinion, it should 1000% be a music holiday. I’m talking pretty much Christmas level of music. Obviously, Christmas is a religious holiday, and Valentine’s Daye is corporate made. And obviously, there aren’t as many traditions and symbols associated with Valentine’s Daye. But think about what we’re missing out on… Half of the songs released are about love anyway, why miss out on an opportunity to celebrate a day that’s centered around it. Maybe I’m crazy, but if I was an artist I’d release a Valentine’s Daye tape, and I’d like to see that being a trend.
Imagine if Certified Lover Boy was a Valentine’s themed album, and Drake released it this weeknd… that’s the world that I wanna live in.
The Table For Two Experience
On Febuary 12th, Valentines Daye weekend, Lucky Daye dropped his EP Table For Two. Usually, I don’t like to do reviews right after things drop, but this is special case for two reasons: First, I had to show love to all the single folk out there on this Valentine’s Daye *still crying*. And second, this is an early front runner for my favorite project of the year, and was the first R&B banger in 2021 for me. Real talk, he’s the best upcoming male R&B artist, don’t @ me.
While it is considered an “EP”, it feels like an album. It was well planned and put together, and it turned out great. The concept of each song having a female duo was brilliant, and perfect for Valentine’s Daye. And then there was the ongoing skit about the, “Table For Two experience” that seemed to be a modern day take on dating, also brilliant. These facts alone make it cohesive enough for me to consider it an album experience. My only critique of the project is I wish it had album length, as it’s only 23 minutes.
However, if even 23 minutes seems too daunting for you. He released a 7 minute visual poem where you can get a sample of some the songs.
Sound Content
This is only the second project from Lucky Daye that I’ve heard, but I’m already getting a sense of his signature sound. I was a big fan after his debut album Painted. He continued to improve on his sound and creativity and made me an even bigger fan. His next project should solidify him in the R&B game, mark my words.
I’m a huge advocate for his music because he has his own unique sound. If gun to my head, I had to describe his music, off the dome, it would be: “Timeless.” He’s got a few vibes that he really capitalizes on and they all take me to a different era. The two I pick up most are a little oldschool R&B and some disco. The disco vibes are much more prominent in his album Painted, which I definitely recommend as well, but it still plays a role in his base sound.
This project accomplished multiple tasks for him. It showed his creative ability, a sample of his talent, and his ability to work with other artists. It gives newer fans a taste of his work and previous fans something to be excited for in the future. Personally, this EP has made me really want his next album, which is always what you want as an artist.
Being from New Orleans, a music landmark in America (and a place I consider home), I’m sure he’s received a lot of influence from his environment. Along with vibes I mentioned previously, he has also stated that the jazz music of the city and growing up in the church have helped craft his sound.
Lyric Content
Of course, since it’s somewhat of a concept project I have to touch on the lyrics. Obviously since it’s a Valentine’s Daye themed project, all of the songs are gonna be love songs, so I’m not gonna get too deep with it. However, the songs are on a love spectrum. On one end we got, “How Much Can A Heart Take (feat. Yebba)” and the other we got, “Dream (feat. Queen Naija)”. I think from the titles of the tracks, you can comprehend the two sides of the spectrum, but if you’re slow (jk), the former represents the single people music and the latter represents the non-single people music, respectively. To categorize, the first four full length songs fall more towards the single side, and the last two trend the opposite way.
But Yeah…
If you’re in the feels this Valentine’s Daye, and looking for some music to reside with definitely give this one a listen. Lucky Daye has got his own style and own unique attempts at love songs. Hopefully when he blows up, some light will be shed on my philosophies and Valentine’s Daye music will be a trend. You’re a real one if you’ve read this far, and let me know what you think of the project or if my ideas are stupid.
